Double Glazing

Double Glazing

Double Glazed windows and doors are made from two panes of glass that are separated by a layer of air or gas and then sealed. They are designed to provide an even better barrier against outside temperatures. The two layers of glass separated by a gap act as an insulator by reducing conduction.

The use of a gas, most often argon gas, between the layers of glass is considered to be a better insulator than those that just make use of sealed pockets of air. Gases like argon allow less heat to escape and less cold to enter because they have a higher density. Southern Star Windows products that feature double glazing make use of an argon gas buffer.

Benefits of Double Glazing

  • Insulation improvements of up to 50%.
  • Reduced noise transmission.
  • Reduced or eliminated need for window coverings.
  • Reduced condensation.
  • Increased security.
  • Improved home resale value.

LOW E GLASS

LOW E GLASS

Low E provides insulation that keeps your home or building warm in the winter by reflecting heat back into the room, and cool in the summer by reflecting the suns heat back through the glass to the exterior. Keeping your home or building cooler in summer and warmer in winter and reducing the need for heating and air conditioning.

Benefits of Low E Glass

  • Energy Efficiency: Low-e glass reduces heat transfer, keeping interiors cooler in summer and warmer in winter, leading to lower energy bills.
  • Comfort: By regulating indoor temperatures, Low-E glass ensures a more comfortable environment with fewer drafts and hot spots near windows.
  • UV Protection: Low-e glass blocks harmful UV rays, preserving interior furnishings and reducing the need for replacements or refurbishments.

TOUGHENED GLASS

Fully toughened glass is four to five times stronger than ordinary glass and is used primarily because of its safety features. Toughened glass is impact resistant and when it is broken it shatters into small, harmless cubes.

LAMINATED GLASS

Laminated glass is used most commonly when safety is paramount. Unlike normal float glass, laminated glass does not break into harmful pieces when it is broken. Two panes of glass sandwich a resin core, allowing the glass panes to stay complete when broken. Laminated glass helps with fading of furnishings and also with reducing unwanted noise.

OBSCURE GLASS

Obscure Glass is glass with any form of distortion either in terms of colour, texture or pattern, allowing for light to pass through into rooms and spaces, while providing privacy and obscuring visibility.

Obscure Glass is most often used in bathrooms and toilets, but can be used anywhere that you need privacy in your home.

Southern Star Windows & Doors offers the following obscure glass options within its Canterbury Timber & Southern Star Aluminium brands:
